Monthly car rental vs leasing: the real math for Chicagoans
Leasing looks cheaper per month. Once you add the down payment, insurance and a 36 month commitment, the answer depends on how long you need the car.
A lot of people who call about monthly rentals are not sure whether they should be renting at all. Maybe they took a six month contract job in the city, or they are waiting for a new car order that keeps getting pushed back. The honest answer is that monthly rentals win for anything under about a year, and leasing usually wins after that. Here is how to work it out for your own situation.
What a lease really costs in year one
Advertised lease payments hide the up-front costs. For a typical compact SUV lease in Illinois you will usually pay a first month payment, an acquisition fee, a documentation fee, title and registration, and often a down payment to get the advertised monthly figure. Illinois also taxes leases on the full payment stream. It is common for the drive-off amount to land between $2,500 and $4,000.
Then there is insurance. A lease requires comprehensive and collision coverage with low deductibles and gap insurance. For a Chicago zip code that often adds $150 to $220 per month compared with liability-only coverage.
What a monthly rental costs
Our sample monthly rate for a compact SUV is $1,219 per 30 days, before taxes. That includes maintenance, roadside assistance, 2,500 miles per cycle, state-minimum liability, and a vehicle swap every 5,000 miles. There is no down payment, no acquisition fee, and no commitment beyond the current 30 day cycle.

- Swap classes when your needs change, for example a minivan for a month of family visits.
- Maintenance, tires and inspections are covered.
The break-even point
When we run the numbers with customers, a lease usually becomes cheaper somewhere between month 9 and month 14. Before that point, the up-front lease costs are spread over too few months to beat a rental. After it, the lower monthly lease payment catches up. If there is any chance you will need to end the arrangement early, for example because of a job change or a move, the rental stays ahead because lease termination fees can run into thousands of dollars.
If you know you need a car for less than a year, rent. If you know you need it for three years, lease or buy. If you are not sure, rent month to month until you are.
Insurance replacement rentals are a special case
If your car is in the body shop after a claim, your insurer may cover a rental at a daily cap, often $30 to $45 per day. Repairs in Chicago currently average four to six weeks because of parts delays, and the daily cap runs out quickly at retail daily rates. Our monthly rate works out to about $30 per day for an economy car, so it often fits inside the cap entirely. We bill most major insurers directly.
Things to check before you commit either way
- Mileage: leases usually allow 10,000 to 12,000 miles per year. Our monthly plans include 2,500 per 30 days, which is 30,000 per year.
- Parking: a leased car needs a permanent spot. Downtown monthly parking can add $250 or more.
- Business use: rentals on a business account are simpler to expense than a personal lease.
